As for cut-throat scientists, you forgot the perpetual favourites of Watson and Crick! They wouldn't have discovered the shape of DNA without stealing Rosalind Franklin's data. They got the Nobel prize, and she died in obscurity.

As for religion + science, Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, was an austrian monk. It was really only with his work that we managed to figure out how evolution can actually work. Without it, it was just smoke and mirrors.
