Midwest rock! I know, this may cause some eyerolling, but I just about GEEK every time that I hear a reference to a place I know in songs. Plus I'm pretty sure I'd hyperventilate if I lived in a BIG CITY. Don't mind visiting, though. And after listening to it, I kind of have to laugh that it's somehow associated with the emo scene (or maybe emo less annoying than when I checked last?).

And now for some commentary.

Wow, ok, so clearly Bujold knows her shit about Russian Imperialism, because really, Barrayar = Imperial Russia, down to the castes, naming conventions, and patriarchal attitudes. I mean, I used to hang with my Russian History prof in the Space Age class I took with him and he'd talk about how when he and his wife would visit that they think of American women as basically male, and that likely Valentina (first woman in space) was given a pat on the behind after her flight, etc. And there's even a bit about Cordelia going over Russian phrases, so obviously intended.

And is it wrong that this makes me sort of love Barrayar, even if they're fucknuts? I dunno, I just don't see Russian Imperialism in sci-fi much (you either get British/Roman or Chinese Feudalism, usually, in my experience). I mean, I'm literally just GEEKING over references and parallels and shit that I recognize. A+. Eastern European represent!

Hrm, other things that pinged me. Cordelia WIGGING OUT over their medical systems. I mean, obviously the Beta Colony has taken a lot of the pain out of reproduction (which hell, if they had that now I'd have kids, no kidding) but there are also other implications that make me uneasy. I dunno what it is, can't put my finger on it exactly. Maybe I've just read too many dystopians to be entirely "whoo hoo, way to go enlightenment!" Maybe it's the whole child license thing that gets me. Which is odd. But it just does.

Droushnakovi and Koudelka (ha, I spelled those WITHOUT HAVING TO LOOK, can I mention it's nice having names that I can pronounce and spell?) are adorable and I hope they don't end up dead now that shit's hitting the fan. I like those kids a lot because they're not just OOO FEMALE WARRIOR TYPE and OOO CRIPPLED DUDE types, they've got other fun things going on (I wanted to adopt Kou because he was so smiley compared to Serious Business all over the place, I won't lie). Cordelia obviously wants to adopt them too.

Oh man, Vordarian trying to freak Cordelia out and her being like, "and I'd be shocked why?" was a pretty awesome scene. Though I was like, "dude arrest his shit already" but eh, it's hard to tell the exact times and shit.

AND IT'S OK ARAL I GET WHY YOU WENT THROUGH WITH THE EXECUTION I'M SORRY PEOPLE AREN'T RATIONAL.

I kind of had to stop in the middle of the Russian Revolution takeover crazy part, because I had to do schoolwork, but it'll be interesting to see where it goes.

NICE TO HAVE YOU BACK, STARBUCK. ABOUT DAMN TIME, REALLY.

Alright, so the Dualla/Lee/Starbuck/Anders drama in Season 3 was a little eyerolly for me, but after Starbuck's little shooting people and "THAT MY BITCH" acting, I like Lee and Starbuck again. I mean, I pity Dualla, but she had Billy, why the hell suddenly go for Lee! No use making that all complicated and shit, come on. AND LOOK AT HOW HOT LEE AND STARBUCK ARE GOING AROUND SHOOTING THINGS. Maybe I've been spoiled by older and rational people, of which neither of those kids are (Lee tries, though). XD Ha ha, that was too long and too weird of a little thing to nitpick at. I'm just old. They went back to proper shenanigans, s'all.

tl;dr, shut up, make out, and shoot things, kthnx.

Tigh and Adama are badass BFFness of badass and they had better both make it out alive OR I WILL BE PISSED. I know, it's dangerous having my three favorites being Tigh, Adama, and Roslin, but geez, COME ON I WANT THEM ALL ALIVE OR WHATEVER AT THE END. THEY DESERVE IT. ESPECIALLY TIGH. Sorry, I just love old military dude BFFs, and how it's like, "oh, you'd better not think you're capturing BOTH of us WE HAVE TELEPATHY, NYAH."

ROSLIN. OMG. ALSO THANK YOU FOR COMING BACK. Yanno, I really appreciate how they basically frakked EVERYONE up with the Earth reveal and various people took various times to get over it, and that's realistic to me, even with such strong almost mythical characters as Adama and Roslin can be. And my favorite thing about the scene where Roslin gets in the shuttle and stuff is the UNCOMFORTABLE LOOKS that Lee and Starbuck make. HA HA YEAH KIDS EVEN YOUR LEADERS CAN GET LAID, TRY NOT TO FAINT.

OMG BALTAR. Alright, I have a love/hate relationship with Baltar, but at least he's consistent. He looks out for his own survival, no matter what conscience he's gaining and I respect that. He's a really good middle place between a lot of the personalities (the ego, if you will, as opposed to the sometimes superego acting Roslin and Adama, and the more Id acting Starbuck and others). I really liked the convo he had with Roslin about them being frauds.

Oh and Chief's got my respect again. SMART MOVE. Seriously dude, you've had RIDICULOUS growth, it's kind of crazy.

Gaeta, seriously, WTF. Moral Event Horizon, you've just about crossed it. I know, I know, it's not like Adama makes perfect decisions, and Gaeta does seem to get the short end of the stick (ha ha), but geez. I dunno, maybe it's all the military historians in my family, but BAD MOVE. Zarek, well, I expected him to jump at the first opportunity of unrest, because he's in a lot of ways the exact opposite of Baltar--he's really not concerned as much about self-preservation as stirring up things. I think that he's honestly UNCOMFORTABLE with peace-time, quite frankly, and wouldn't know what to do with himself if everyone got along. So he's probably dancing around Colonial One in his underwear.

Also, I need to stop reading commentary on Hulu because it's starting to piss me off. If you don't like the show STOP WATCHING. It's easy! Sometimes I wonder if people join fandoms or watch things just to complain. Oh wait, that's anti-fandom. Right. God it's annoying though. I actually really really like this season so far, haters can shove it. XD I don't like Lost but you don't see me all up in their crib bitching about the soap opera-ness of it. Bah.

So yeah, blah blah.

P.S. I SPY SOME FAMILIAR FACES ON THIS PAGE OF PHOTOS.

Holy man, in the general direction of the Bowie remixes. Burning that with thanks. XD

It's a fitting first CD for my new car.

Also:

I just about GEEK every time that I hear a reference to a place I know in songs

- I hear you on this. I do the same thing whenever anywhere in Western Canada is mentioned, pretty well ever.

Lee and Kara are best when they are running around and kicking ass

Amen.

Funny thing, so my Sidekick here at school made me watch that episode nearly as soon as I got back because he wanted someone to rant at. It was hilarious.

There's an entire [short story? novel? novelette? i don't know] examining the repercussions of the uterine replicator. Basically, it's a planet of gay dudes who make boys who grow up to be gay dudes. And one is sent off-planet to get more eggs. I mean, storytelling A++++, but talk about the implications. THIS IS WHY I LOVE HER STORIES.

Hot damn, that's rock on. I figured the author was aware of it, she doesn't seem particularly BLIND to any of the issues she brings up, which is kind of nice.

God, imagine what a collab between Bujold and LeGuin would have been like. I would have died.

Also, you've seen the pictures I've found of you and Drak in your Rosa and Rydia costumes?

And, I found a zodiac cocktails site, these are the Taurus ones (http://intoxicatedzodiac.com/blog/category/cocktails-of-taurus/).

Yeah.

Tigh’s face when Roslin walked in during his report was priceless. In Gaeta’s defenses there are a lot of good plausible reasons for wanting to take the old man out of power given his special treatment of his group it’s just silly to do at the moment when you have no plans of your own or any viable replacements for anyone, then if Gaeta had gotten all that together Adama would okay it and then sweep Roslin off her feet for lots of activities your parents do when you aren’t around.

Gunner Aeris is cute!!!

It's a novel, Ethan of Athos, and it's pretty interesting if not one of her best. One of the things I really like about Bujold is her tendency to smack her characters with the consequences of their assumptions, and give many of them the opportunity the be presented with other people who have totally different worldviews and assumptions.

Holy frak!

SUDDENLY I REMEMBER WHY I LOVE BSG.

I SECOND YOUR RENEWED LOVE FOR LEE/KARA and KARA/ANDERS. THANK YOU BSG WRITERS FOR REMINDING US WHY WE LOVED HER PRIOR TO HER CRAZY FREAK OUT IN SEASON 3.

I think that my favourite scene (though maybe it was a little contrived) was the scene of the old man walking down the hall with everyone behind him. We all felt buoyed by his sense of character. AMAZING.

AND I HAVE TO SAY THE COMPARISON OF THE TWO FIRING SQUAD SCENES WAS PHENOMENAL. It was as if they were summing up why Gaeta didn't succeed in one scene. When the admiral had to carry out an execution, he was there because that's the right thing to do. Gaeta wasn't. You can imagine that if someone like Adama had tried to pull off the coup it might've succeeded. It didn't though and that was kind of brilliant.

DID YOU SEE THE SIX'S SHOCKED FACE WHEN ROSLIN WENT OFF ON HER RANT? I'm coming for you. It was kind of fantastic! She would be a woman who would be mildly terrifying when she's raging.

I SUDDENLY LOVE THE CHIEF AGAIN TOO. It's like in this moment of crisis they've all remembered who they are/supposed to be. Maybe a transformative moment? I think that coupling that with the Chief's realization as to why Adama's trying to work with the cylons - namely, their old ships are literally falling to pieces - is kind of brilliant (and waaayyy more realistic than most sci fi shows where these 'space caravans' can travel on indefinitely. WEAR AND TEAR PEOPLE.)

tl:dr; BATTLESTAR IS FRAKKING AWESOME. I AM SO IN LOVE.
