Two Steps Forward, Five Steps Back
So, in case you were no where near the internet or the media, Don't Ask, Don't Tell got repealed. I am glad for this because as my mom put it "it's not like they don't know who is or who isn't gay in the military" but as I said, "yeah, but now they can't use that as an excuse to get them kicked out." Not to mention worse things.
About fucking time for that. Naturally, though, there's stuff going on that still upsets me.
On the other hand, the some of news media is continuing their smear campaign against the women who have accused Assange (aka: the freakish looking wikileaks guy) of rape, because they support freedom of information. Going so far as to release the names of the accusers/victims (typically you don't release a rape victim's name, because she/he/zie will get harassed. GO FIGURE.)
Cognitive dissonance much?
It really does break my heart that the message of a lot of those freedom of information or open source people is that it only seems to matter if you're exposing military secrets or disproving global warming. It's perfectly ok to leak false information if your front man happens to not know the meaning of the word 'no' because women are always lying bitch sluts.
If this is what they really meant, fuck them. Seriously.
Of course one of my favorite femninist bloggers has been calling two of the irresponsible news media types, Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann out on their shit, and naturally she's been met with some hostility. Go to her site, and read the posts with #mooreandme in the title. Or check out that hashtag on twitter.
I hope to some day live in a world where my words and the words of my friends will truly matter. Today is not that day, and we've still got a long way to go.
