Linkages, Excellent Weekend

My ladyfriend's visit was great, I have more energy now. I'll get up the last of my Cosplay and Sewing Week ("week" is something of a misnomer now I realize) either later today or tomorrow. I think I might start babbling about science and videogames for the remainder of 3W4DW.

Here's a pile of links.

- Animation blogs that inform, teach, and inspire.

- Nice gothy tarot deck

- Inclusivity, or another reason why roller derby is my favorite sport to watch. Not perfect, of course, but really it is my favorite sport.

- Teenage bedroom. A tumblr with pictures of old (or current) teenage bedrooms. I admit I have something of a fascination with them, as I remember mine was basically my mind thrown up on my walls.

- Educational games that teach computer science. Since one of the projects I'm on right now deals with computer science careers, this caught my attention.

- Occupation, Empire, Rebellion: A History of Libya

- Real life Tony Stark thinks we'll be on Mars in 10 years. I am skeptical, but hopeful.

- The Smurfette Principle

- MMO Schooling. I certainly hope we can figure this out.

- What Does Equality Mean These Days?

- How to watch movies in the theater for free. Since I no longer know anyone in the local theaters anymore (they have since moved on to bigger and better things) this might be helpful for my movie addiction.

- Lollycopter. Another upcycle designer I like.

- Uncle Scarecrow. One of the reasons I love the comic Namesake so much.

- Poor countries and piracy. Or media companies are just not getting it. Again.

- Yarn bombed bike racks.

- Bad Reputation's Fairy Tale Fest. A look at fairytales in a feminist context.

- The Class War that Dare Not Speak Its Name. The longer I'm out of school, the more liberal I seem to get.

- On Femmephobia and Geek Subcultures. The post she's responding to is also well worth a read.

- Roll a D6. Fantastic parody of "Like a G6".

- A Brief History of Videogame Music. Inspired by Bear McCreary's work on SOCOM 4.

- The National Endowment for the Arts is now accepting videogame submissions for grants. For realz.

- The Finch: a cute robot for science education.

- Tentacle scarf.

- The Smithsonian will be doing an art of videogames exhibit. Saving up to go see it, thankfully I have time.

- Ladies, put some pants on, you're keeping the mens from religion!

- How to shop at discount stores without looking cheap. YMMV on this.

- Of Another Fashion. A tumblr which is collecting the history of fashion in regards to US women of color.

- A wonderful Inception fanfic featuring a FTM Eames

I always love your links.

On Femmephobia: "So if I waltz into the local comic or game shop in a corset with my face covered in MAC Studio Fix, you can give me the stink eye all you want to. You’ll be hating me even more when I get home and roflstomp you in Soul Calibur 4." Hell to the yeah. Remember!: Ginger Rogers did EVERYTHING Fred Astaire did, only BACKWARDS AND IN HIGH HEELS. Take that.

On how we sluts ruin men’s holiness:

"Sometimes when I see a girl provocatively dressed, I say to myself, “She probably doesn’t even know that 101 men are going to devour her in their minds today… But then again, maybe she does.” To be honest, I don’t know the truth. The truth of why she chooses to dress the way she does… The truth of why she chooses to walk the way she does, the way she chooses to act… I don’t know, because I’ve never sat down with a girl and asked her why. All I know if that the way she presents herself to the world is bait for my sinful mind…"

"To the girls who are ignorant, please serve your brother and have your dad screen your wardrobe. Ask him how you can better choose holiness over worldliness. He’s a guy, he knows more than you do on the issue."

MY ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE WAS IN THIS ARTICLE. Yes, don't talk to an actual woman, just preach at "them." And my dad? MY DAD?! (The extension of this is letting your husband pick--only if I let my husband pick, I wear Victorian corsets and red leather pumps and pencil skirts with ruffles and a WHOLE LOT OF BOLLYWOOD... ;D) But back to the point:

My dad thinks women should wear generously sized man cut button downs and pleated slacks and penny loafers. He cares not about "modesty" so much as making you like like a REALLY PREPPY bull dyke. Oh, and you had better be a size 0 or that better be a quadruple XL size (CLOTH TOUCHING SKIN, WHAT MADNESS IS THIS???)

Add in that tits are just automatic sin to begin with--oh, and asses! Yeah, no, DON'T PUT ON PANTS! We might be able to see Mary Tyler Moore has TWO. DISTINCT. BUTTOCKS. HOLY SHIT! D8

... Yeeeeeeah, this is kind of a trigger for me. 8|;;; And just for the record? I get hit on more when I'm more covered up--though maybe that has something to do with the fact my lazy day winter clothes are much more approachable than my summer lazy day clothes of olive drab cargo pants and wifebeaters (look,, I still add sarongs and a ton of jewelry, what more do you assholes want?)

But, no, I've heard this stupid argument SO MANY TIMES. And while I've upheld and continue to support certain limitations (there is a certain image I wish to present at church and at work versus just being out and about, or in a night on the town), adult women are more than capable of understanding this. They don't need to be informed by men. This is just plain wrong.

And not just because het men would mentally undress a woman in a burka if they suspected she was fuckable.

Jesus's message boils down to "be responsible for your own damn self, bitches." Let's stick to this.
