Now I remember why I never go on vacation
Fucking hell do I have shit to catch up on. Nice to see my sister and hang out, but I'm opting out of the next family trip. Running off of other people's schedules and being stranded in awkward dinners always makes me cranky. Call me a control freak all you want, but I like being in charge of my own itinerary much better than being written in on someone else's. And this comes from someone that likes riding the bus.
Now that the cranky is out of the way, some interesting things:
- Lychee is my new favorite odd flavor ever. It's like eating a tasty flower and is not gross.
- My sister's roommates are fun and accommodating, and I remember now why while Freshman year was fun, I'd rather not go back to it.
- I still get confused for 18 by some people. The irony being that some of those people think I'm a younger sister. I used this to my advantage a few times
- Missy's room is very small and makes me want to do a study on group dynamics in contained spaces. Seriously, she has three roommates, it's crazy.
- We own season one of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which my sister promptly stole since she's on quarters and has two weeks left. "To help her sanity" yeah right. We got to watch some and it is awesome in ways that I hadn't remembered. Young Norman Rockwell is adorable by the way. Didn't see the new movie because Missy and I are veterans of the theatre system and know Memorial Day Weekend is a terrible time to see a new movie as it brings all the asshats.
- Crawling through windows and getting into restricted areas with my sister was the best time ever. I think that may have been my favorite part of the weekend. Her campus has awesome old buildings. I might have swiped some old hardware. >.>
- Nearly half done with The Difference Engine now. I have developed a fondness for the character Mallory, as he's a fussy scientific type with some moderate ambitions. The extreme Victorian-ness of the setting is a bit jarring at times (can't name the amount of times I've wanted to smack characters for imperialist comments) but it speaks well as to the amount of research that went into it. Alternate timeline novels have a tendency of whitewashing the less savory bits of societies, but this holds no punches. I'm also having fun with recognizing all the various historical figures they have scattered throughout--it brings very happy fuzzy recollections of my technological history classes. I won't hide the fact I've a certain fondness for industrialists; at least back in the day.
- My dislike of cars is growing every day. Roadtrips are fun with the right people, but ick. I am just not so fond right now.
- I am clearly getting old; sleeping in cramped quarters and in odd positions is not being nice to my back. Or maybe that's just leftover from my accident. Bah.
- Adults that ask me "is this what you want to do with your life?" annoy me a lot. Seriously, having a life ambition of "doing something cool" is damn alright to me. Half the reason I'm busting my ass in college is for flexibility. I do not intend on staying in the same job for 20+ years I want my life to be interesting not secure. Is that too bold? At least I didn't run off to Europe or something and had the sense to build up a decent resume. Bah.
- I need to find out where the hell the Bubble Tea in this town is. I know where it is up at school, and at my sister's school, but bugger if I know where it is around here. I forgot how awesome that stuff was.
- I like the understanding my sister and I have come to. Not that we hadn't patched up the usual juvenile fights (I kind of ditched her for a time, which was mean of me) before she went to college, but the understanding is quite a lot more than even I had anticipated. Even if she still gets cranky at me.
- Um... not much else. My brain is abuzz with the crap I have to get done now.
