Welcome to the beginning

Living! Man, so much has happened lately. Went and saw Watchmen, because sometimes I do go with the crowd (I'm a semi-old fan, kind of like how I got into FF7 fandom like just before the word of Advent Children came out... weird timing, basically). Since all the cool kids write reviews, here's mine:

Oh man, so my favorite bit was actually totally the intro credits. So not even kidding. There were all sorts of famous scenes and pictures redone with the Minutemen, and that was pretty fucking awesome. Silohuette was one of those characters I'd always wished there had been more screentime in the novel for, because she's interesting! And while in the book her murder after getting expelled for her activities (read: hot times with hot chicks) was merely just a mention, actually SEEING that scene in full and living color just... it made me tear up a bit. Ok a lot. I get way too attached to really fucking minor characters, don't I? I think I may have to cosplay her at some point. Kinky Austrian Lesbian Heroes are fun. Plus, her outfit fucking rocks. I also missed seeing much of Captain Metropolis, but I can see why they cut and retold what they cut, I'm hoping for some DVD extras with him. XD

Out of the main cast, Rorschach, Nite Owl II, and Hollis (Nite Owl I) were always my favorites. Not so much on Hollis (and thankfully I didn't have to see HIS death, though I suspect a DVD extra there) in the movie, but the bits he had made me smile. They cast a freaking fabulous Rorschach, I cannot get over how ridiculous perfect that guy is. I'd never even HEARD of the actor before (or I'd merely overlooked him). Yay right-wing sociopaths! I didn't think Nite Owl II was chunky enough. XD Is that sad? Seriously, he was like Hollywood fat, which was like... not at all. One of the things I adored about Dan was the fact he was a chubby nerd guy (who kind of reminds me of my Sidekick, and considering I went and saw it with my Sidekick it was hilarious talking with him at Denny's afterward). But the actor got his personality, so I can forgive him for falling into the Hollywood trap with appearances. XD

I finally got Dr. Manhattan. I mean, he can across alright in the novel, but I really didn't feel his disconnection with humanity, or why Laurie's daddy reveal would affect him. I also just about cried when he thought that he'd given his old friends cancer. I mean, punch to the gut much? Excellent job there dude, hard fucking role.

Mommy Silk Spectre was also ridiculously awesome, and I like that they fixed up her awful original costume (that may have been part of Alan Moore's point, but between him and the artist, they had no fucking clue how to dress women, I'm sorry. Purple fishnets? In 1940? Are you kidding me?) for something more pin-up, which fits her character. I even liked her daughter's striperrific rendition, then again, I hated her original costume a whole lot. XD As for Laurie, her daughter, she was meh. But she was always meh to me. A little whiny, a little meh; I think part of me is annoyed that there wasn't a second Silhouette or something awesome like that. But I get why not. But come on, if in 1940 you have two girls on the team, why not in like 1985? Though I do like that Dan gets the girl, just because Dan should get the girl, even if she's mostly just eye candy. XD

I was really surprised to find I really really like Ozymandias now. I mean, seriously. I like that wiry little guy! And his snappy dressing! And how he talked! I mean he's like Rufus Shinra's extremely fabulous cousin with his own live Barbie Doll secretary. That sounds really shallow, but serious, 98% of movies is the pretty. I think he might be a favorite now. XD I seriously want his action figure! SERIOUSLY. My birthday is in May....

So, the ending. Honestly, it made sense. Without the Black Freighter bits or the other plot threads, the squid makes no goddamn sense. If they had added all that, it would have been a mini-series, not a movie. So yeah. Quit yer bitchin', fanboys. Unless it's as bad an adaptation as say Ella Enchanted (I still cannot get over how terrible that was), you're just splitting hairs. And as a film nerd and a book nerd, honestly, different mediums, and it's really neat to see the strengths and weaknesses of both. Hell, I actually like Harry Potter in the films, whereas I was lukewarm in the books. Some things are awesome like that.

I liked it, I thought it was a valiant effort, and while the stop-motiony action sort of hurts my eyes, it did capture bits in a comic bookish way, so I can forgive that. I could have done without the nearly fetishistic use of blood and gore throughout (the comic was violent, and in some places graphic, but some graphicness was added when there was really no need). Don't be Quentin Tarantino. There's enough fanboys making movies out there. Don't make me come and beat you up, Zack Snyder.

Second favorite bits were the prison, but that's because it was like Rorschach Delivers His Best Lines, Dan and Laurie Kick Ass, and the Lighting Effects Rocked.

And this makes for the second major thing I've watched recently that uses a version of the song "All Along the Watchtower". Hrm, I wonder what this says about our generation. I liked a lot of the music choices throughout, for sheer hilarity and the fact a lot of hippie music cracks me up anyway.

I'm also a week off on Battlestar Galactica, but that's ok cause Hulu is a week off, and last weekend sucked ass. So I've just seen the episode "Someone To Watch Over Me" and any other BSG fans, plz mark any spoilers for the latest one. Also; my dad and I were arguing over this over the phone. It was hilarious.

Omg, I loved the whole piano bit. Seriously. Starbuck, I just knew you had daddy issues. XD But that bit was a little heartwarming, really. And omg THAT SONG. THAT SONG IS IN MY MIIIIIND.

ROSLIN! OMG. YOU CAN'T DIE LIKE THAT. YOU HAD BETTER NOT BE FUCKING DEAD, WOMAN.

And Chief. Ok, so I had a period of time I didn't like... feel bad for him at all. No one told you you had to marry Callie, dumbass. And as it turns out, she totally didn't just have a thing for you, hey! But my heart broke for him. Oh BOOMER. JESUS BOOMER WHY? Actually, no, I get why but STILL. AND THAT WAS A BITCH MOVE TO DO TO ATHENA. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW UPSET THAT ALL MADE ME OMG.

I kind of love that this show would pull something like that though. CRACK COCAINE I AM ON IT YES.

I'll continue to hyperventilate over here.

I was outside a lot and went to the pub with Nanomatt, and made plans for when his girlfriend moves up here. Double date, I can has. It's only 50 degrees Farenheit now, but it's supposed to rain and stuff more and warm up. And my Spring Break (aka; time I get my wisdom teeth out and crash on the fucking couch) is next week! HOLY COW. Time, she goes so fast! RP picked up too, man, no time to breathe! This is actually kind of exciting, ha. And I have Metric's album Fantasies, and it's rockin'. Comment if you want it, I'll send the link.

P.S. The Watchmen opening sequence, at least until it gets taken down again. GET IT WHILE YOU CAN.

The opening credits for Watchmen are amazing, some of the best I've ever seen. Probably my favourite part of the entire movie.

Like I"m waiting for someone to leak bits onto like youtube so I can download that bit. I could just watch that bit over and over.

[identity profile] deadshrimpblues.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It was up on YouTube for about two hours. The production company that collaborated with Snyder on it posted the entire thing online as well - in HD, no less - but that got zapped too.

There's no real point in taking it down, honestly. If I saw that credits sequence and nothing else, I'd be in line for a ticket to the full movie ASAP.

No kidding! I'm tracking it down, though, despite. XD

Did you notice who Nite Owl I is punching out in the first shot, by the way? It took me a few times to cotton on.

The Batman posters in the background make it extra-extra-meta.

I WAS SO SHOCKED BY THAT ATHENA/BOOMER BIT TOO. BUT I KIND OF LOVED BOOMER FOR DOING IT TOO. WE CLEARLY SHARE A LOVE FOR CRACK.

Though, on second reflection, if some kid had written that I'd lable it as unrealistic bad fanfiction. OH THE FUN..

I ALSO LOVED THE PIANO SO. MUCH. I can't believe that some people were indifferent to it! I thought it was all mildly brilliant and I was so. full. of. love!

Two more episodes for me now, hiss. Catch up so that I can rant to someone again! XD

Enjoy the spring break (but good luck with the wisdom teeth!).

Silhouette was one of my favorite minor characters too! POOR SILHOUETTE.

But I teared up a little when they actually managed to show Dollar Bill.

Call me not with the times, but what's Metric? XD

[identity profile] venefica-aura.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
A Canadian band. I seem to collect Canadians so I'm a bit hooked on them.

Here's the wiki on them. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_(band))

I also may or may not write 70% of my fiction to their music.
