crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (Default)

Alright, finally getting to this. I wrote something else originally, but it was long and rambly, so I figured I'd keep this to the simple stuff, k? It's still long, but it a waaaay better format.

Past

- I used to work for the Air Force, working on in-house computer programs that were a combination of Finite Element Analysis and a rapid structural modeling. I also helped with a prototype, wrote a user manual, and learned C++. Before I turned 20. Since this was gov't work, I can't link you to anything. XD

- I also worked at a greeting card factory hand folding cards for just under full time (by four hours a week) and working weekends at a movie theater, which was my high school job. This was after I turned 20. Fortunes can change SO quickly.

- I was married for less than a year, and sometimes I talk about it. Suffice to say that was a bad situation. When I refer to The Ex, that's usually him.

- So, by the time I was 21, I'd switched jobs three times, lived in two states, three cities, and was divorced. This is to give you a sense of the pace of my life. XD

- I spent six years getting an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering. This technically makes me a rocket scientist.

- Somewhere in the middle of that I got into Final Fantasy VII fandom, which is how I'm on the internet now. I've since branched out into several of the games in the franchise and some other things.

- I used to be a bit of a jerk sometimes, and this can crop up even still. Feel free to tell me when I'm a jerk.

- For my senior project, I helped build a UAV plane. F-locked pictures here. I have a Senior Design tag, there may be some bitching in there, though, so. XD

- I got a job with a small educational video game and training company. While I enjoyed several aspects of my work there, company politics and shenanigans got to be a bit much. I worked as the content expert for two major game releases as well as a out-of-school STEM project with NASA. Learned a lot, made some connections that got me where I am now.

Present

- I'm 27 as of this post's update (08/20/2012).

- I'm gay! Yeah. Re: divorce. XD I'm seeing [livejournal.com profile] drakonlily/[personal profile] novel_machinist. She's awesome.

- I live on my own now, in an apartment that is a ten minute walk from my university. I love downtown.

- I just got into grad school! I'm on a Master's track for Human-Computer Interaction Design, which is a fascinating as all hell. I simply adore my cohort and my professors thus far.

- As part of grad school I TA for a class on Human-Robot Interaction. So. Exciting.

Future

- My goal in life is to keep doing cool stuff. This probably means my life will be very random.

- I intend on moving around a lot. Not traveling. Moving. I don't think you really get to know an area until you live there.

- I've started visiting my friends around the country and staying on their couches. This is an efficient way to travel. If I know you well enough, I could end up on yours!

Hobbies

- I write both fanfiction and original fiction (though more fanfiction because it is just quicker for me to write and eats my brain). I try to archive all fanfiction and original fiction here on wordpress but I also maintain a ficjournal [personal profile] oldmansfiles. I post links for my old LJ people at [livejournal.com profile] viniel (mostly FF stuff). I sometimes pop up in writing communities. Mostly I do it for myself and random challenges that come by. I generally keep a list of things I am working on or want to work on because I am like that. I have a presence in AO3 and FF.net, but you can find that in my profile. XD

- I cosplay. I just started getting into it about six years ago, and while I am not as OMFG AWESOME as some, I think it's fun. You will see flailing and sometimes polls in here about that. I'm not shy about pictures of myself up on the internet, but please don't use them for evil.

- I like clothes and style a lot and think that just because you're a smart person doesn't mean you have to look like you just slept in a dumpster. So I take pictures of my outfits sometimes and link style blogs. I usually put the outfit pictures up on my flickr because it's all professional looking there. I also like to take pictures of my decorating, and sometimes the contents of my bag, because organization porn is fun.

- Because of my love of clothes and costuming, I sew. I use a 1943 White Sewing Machine or a 1960s Kenmore, and well, hand sew. I'm getting pretty good at it now, and almost at the point where I can draft my own patterns. With more free time I should be able to do more things with that. I've opened an etsy shop for my accessories, some made, some found to help offload some of my cosplay costs. That and I like making things and I'm never going to wear them all.

- Speaking of pictures, I'm just getting back into photography after a "fuck my camera broke" hiatus. I have a Canon Digital Rebel EOS XSi, with some extras. I take pictures of really random stuff. And Roller Derby bouts. My dA account is mostly where my pictures end up, but I sometimes link them in entries.

- I love music, and like to make mixtapes. You will likely see some of those up. Under lock, because I don't want Joe Blow coming in and taking all the awesome. This is a friends-only benefit! XD And as an ex-movie theater worker I have seen a ton of movies and like to continue with that. Expect offbeat recommendations.

- I also read. Feel free to friend me on goodreads. Sometimes I write reviews (for books/movies/whatever) because I actually used to do that for a while and I feel the need to occasionally. And yes, I like Literature. Probably because I wasn't an English major and get to read it in my own time and interpret it my own way. I heard that helps. If you are an English major and actually liked something on your reading list, please feel free to recommend something.

- I love food. It's not really a hobby, but more an explanation. Because when you see pictures of me, you'll assume I don't eat. Not true. I love food. And wine. And beer. I love it all. I've started cooking now, so I may also talk about that.

Demographics

- Yes, I am actually female.

- My family is upper middle class, so I had a fair amount of privilege growing up! I don't deny this. And I think my family did a good job not giving in to every demand a wee Cendri would have. Any money complaints you hear from me are because I'm just starting out on my own and try very very hard not to ask for much financial help from them, and I haven't lived off their support for a good four years now. Don't be embarrassed to come to me if you are having a tough time, though, I may be able to help.

- I have one sibling, who is more brilliant than me. She is also evil. And younger. Yes, I'm an oldest child. It probably shows. She's just starting grad school. She's a microbiologist.

- My heritage is Polish/Russian/Czech. This means my last name is largely unpronounceable to the general population. It also means face matcher software thinks I'm Al-Bhed.

- I was raised Catholic, and now I'm a vague spiritualist that is trying to figure out the sorts of rituals I get into. Mostly spirituality is a personal thing to me and I won't butt into your space. I don't like extremism of any kind, so if you get extremist, I might just ignore you, or if you're mean about it, say something. But mostly feel free to talk about any religious beliefs you have, I've no problem with anyone as long as they come by it honestly.

- I'm gay, but I don't like it to define me all the time. I guess saying I'm feminist is more of an indicator. I used to a tad on the misogynist side, so this is a real turnaround. I've been looking at a lot of things from my newly enlightened (well more enlightened) perspective and when I learn stuff, I typically babble about it. I'm pretty accepting of trans people, and polyamorous people, so don't diss them either. If there's a subgroup, I probably have a friend in it (yes, even furries--I have three actually). So keep that in mind if you make blanket statements.

- I'm reflective, and like to share. I'm also an introvert, but a friendly one. Mainly I'm an introvert in the way that means I can't be around people 24/7 without it exhausting the hell out of me. This isn't anti-social. I like to be around people and talk to them. I just need alone time. All this alone time has made me a reflective analyzing type. And since I did go through some tough shit, I figure that some of the things I learn upon reflection may help other people out. Maybe not. Not forcing you to read. XD
