Questions! Answered!
Jul. 5th, 2011 01:22 pmAnswering questions from
whitemage.
1. How the heck do you find so much music in such a variety?
I watch several music blogs in a variety of categories (punk, hip-hop, angry girl music) as well as pick up a lot of stuff from movies/TV shows that I watch. The iPhone apps Shazam and SoundHound help me catch a lot of songs I hear through there. I also download a lot of FSTs and watch
lj_mixtape.
Mostly, I'm a digital packrat with an ear open nearly all the time. And you remind me I have a mix to post soon.
2. You're new in town and looking for a restaurant to eat at tonight: how do you go about it?
I use my Where app to get a sense of what's around, and then do individual websearches on the places, looking for reviews.
Either that or I pick a direction and go to the first place that looks interesting.
3. How does one get the damn kids off their lawn?
Booby traps.
4. What first got you into fashion?
I was actually really into ballet as a kid, but not in the sense that I wanted to be a ballerina, just ballets themselves. The theatrics of them. So my sister and I would write out plays/ballets and design the sets, the costumes, and have various dolls (or horses or LEGOS or whatever else we had on hand) be the actors. I ended up tending more towards costume design (which I rarely made, because we were dealing with dolls and toys that didn't always get dressed up easily due to their shape and you know SOME OF THEM BEING MY SISTER'S HORSE TOYS).
What this has to do with fashion: fashion is costumery. One of the things that Lady Gaga has right is her whole fashion+performance thing she's got going on. I do that too, but on a much less aggressive level. I don't dress up in the morning thinking about what I want to wear, I dress up thinking what do I want to be today.
So, essentially I got into fashion because my life feels like a performance art piece that only I know the meaning of. XD
5. What is the single most imperative overhaul needed in public education?
Stop punishing teachers for failing kids in a class. You know what, sometimes a repeat helps. And it's much better for a student to fail while they are still in public school, before they are paying for classes in college and putting themselves into debt. The way a lot of public schools operate makes the teacher fear to fail anyone, so they keep lowering the bar to pass everyone, lest they get knocked on their performance reviews.
There's a lot of other things, but I think that would be something that would help teachers a lot and produce better students.

Interview Thing
Jun. 25th, 2011 05:12 pmHey, that thing with the questions.
jerkface asked me these. You want questions, ah, I dunno show me your favorite math equation. If you don't have one, then show me one you think is neat.
1. What first inspired you to become a rocket scientist? How did you go from engineering to creating video games about engineering?
So, I was 8 years old when I decided I wanted to be a rocket scientist. It was Spring Break, my family was on a road trip (which my dad had been teasing me would be a "fish hatchery"... I really hated fish). Turns out we ended up in Huntsville, Alabama, at the NASA center there. I remembered seeing a rocket and going wow I want one of those. I already had a bit of an interest in astronomy (this is why they decided to take us there) but it was just like. I dunno. I had to know how huge ass rocket of awesome was made.
My dad said that the people that made that were aerospace engineers. So from then on, this was my goal. I remember teachers being rather surprised that I had my college major picked out in elementary school. What can I say, when I decide to do something, I guess I do it?
So this is why my current job confuses a lot of people. Because they assume rocket scientist = holy shit why are you not working for NASA? Well, about 80% of aerospace jobs are actually defense, and well, missiles. And I actually was on the defense work track; I managed to get a job at 19, which would have set me up at graduate to work for the Air Force Research Lab.
But two major things happened:
1. My ex
2. Government work became really stifling.
I actually rather liked my mentor at AFRL, he was a really hip guy, and I helped him do a lot of outreach work with local schools (my favorite thing was these little foam planes that I used to explain angle of attack to a bunch of 10 year olds). And I didn't realize at the time what an effect that had on me.
So drama happened and I managed to nearly fuck up my life and I end up at the company I am now because my life is a series of accidental opportunities (no really). It was supposed to just be an internship, and I started out just doing content research for them; they'd gotten this grant to do space games and kind of didn't have anyone that knew what the heck to do with that aside from YAY SPACE.
Now, Aerospace Engineering is kind of the most interdisciplinary of the standard engineering disciplines. A lot goes into a plane or rocket and you gotta learn at least a little of all in order to do your part the best. And well, turns out that made me incredibly qualified to handle a fairly new industry full of energy and risks and well shenanigans.
But best of all, I get to be creative. Sometimes it wears me out, not gonna lie, especially considering our management chain is not what it should be...
So I ended up here because I nearly failed at life, and have discovered things I am passionate about again (which, to be frank, I was starting to lose in school... not because of the subject matter, mostly because the industry is INCREDIBLY conservative). I've got BIG GOALS again, and kind of don't know where I'll be in five years and am ridiculously happy about that.
And technically, I still managed to work for NASA (all of our games are NASA approved, technically, and with the program this summer I work directly with their education directorate and get to talk to dudes working there!)
So tl;dr I'm here because I liked rockets when I was a kid and then decided that making weapons was a poor life choice and decided to make games instead.
2. What is your favorite non-Final Fantasy game?
It's a three-way tie between ICO, Persona 3, and Soul Reaver 2. I can't choose between them because they are such different genres. And this is likely to change! But right now, those are the ones.
3. You have just been elected Queen of the World. What is your first act as queen?
Heh, I'd take the profits from industry and use them to fund public education the way it should be funded. I'll always be of the thought that education should be free and easily accessible for everyone and the fact that it's not really so pisses me off so much you have no idea. I think that a lot of problems with society could potentially be helped by this.
4. If you could drink only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Tea. Herbal, because of my goddamn not!ulcer, but tea. If you're thinking alcoholic, I would have to say a bloody mary. But that can be painful. :/
5. So you like tags. Which tag from your LJ/DW best sums up your life as a blogger?
"beer is awesome"
I have so many tags mostly because I ah, don't use them properly. I kind of use them as tl;dr summaries.

Happy New Year!
Jan. 1st, 2011 02:56 amMy contributions to the previous year are:
- I'm a Free Bitch a fanfic for Lady Gaga's video "Bad Romance" as a part of the Yuletide challenge. Yes, I did write fanfiction for a music video. And it was awesome. Hilariously enough the only other Bad Romance fic in the archive liked the same line for the song title, though it was more abbreviated.
- The fic year in review meme. Cause I do that every year now.
Among other things. XD Later I'll finish up reverb10 and more Yuletide recs.

It has attacked. Staying home today to avoid infecting more people with it. This was a good plan.
Thanks for responding to my little poll yesterday! It helped muchly.
I have one more poll, but it's cosplay related, because I can't decide on my Persona 3 cosplay. If you are so inclined, poll is here. You don't have to know the game, I linked pictures. XD

Drak's Meme
Feb. 17th, 2010 10:33 pmEveryone looks at their friends. You have thought to yourself "I wish I looked like [friend]". Because in your mind they're wonderful and beautiful and of course they can't be X size. Fact of the matter is that you probably don't know what their shape is at all, let's find out. Post your measurements or just a picture of yourself if you're nervous. If you do, I'll tell you three beautiful things about you.
Chest: 29"
Waist: 28"
Hips: 33"
And no, I am not a size 0. XD Haven't been since junior high. Models have more hips than I do and are my weight and usually at least half a foot taller. Whacked, huh?
I will get back to real entries soon enough, we have a new grant we just started on today that's due the 1st, and that means I'm under a lot of stress. XD

Apr. 26th, 2009 03:31 pmThe first TEN people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. If you absolutely can't write, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drawings or icons or something instead.
Except you don't HAVE to post this. Because I'm nice like that.

Most vague meme evar

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.
1. Science
Science is awesome! Science is a pain! Science is where I've chosen to make my profession. Maybe not straight meticulous science of doom, but I'm that kind of nerd. Since I want to do a lot of things with my life, being a science teacher of somesort for a while also falls into plans. XD
2. Writing
Something I probably do too much of, considering that none of it helps me to gain a living (nor will, I've no desire to do it full time). But it's a very fun hobby and keeps me sane. So there's something to be gained there.
3. Cosplay
Probably the most fantastic hobby evar and how I met
safety_caesars.
4. Identity
Something I babble a lot about and find important. Who you are and what you identify as in everything in your life matters. I happen to think it's something constantly in flux (at least for me) and something people should keep tabs on. XD
5. Steampunk
In another time and another gender, I would totally be a crazy inventor. Steampunk sort of appeals to that wizit-loving, elaborate crazy side of me and gets me in a dress without too many complaints. XD

That Unpopular Fandom Opinions Meme
Feb. 21st, 2009 04:39 pmWhat the hell. I'll keep it general, though, and not turn it into something that's obviously skewed to one fandom.
( this shouldn't surprise anyone )
( this shouldn't surprise anyone )
So I realized this homework assignment that is driving me nuts actually was totally done last semester and I have the solutions from it at home. So I'm really not going to worry now! I have a couple minutes before my next class, so I think I'm going to just breathe for a few minutes. So let's have fun times.

B) In the search box, enter the year yougraduated started from high school. Get the list of the 100 most popular songs of that year.
C) Italize the songs you liked, strike through the ones you hated, and bold your favorites. Do nothing to those you don’t remember or don’t care about.
I cheated and went with the year I started because I actually listened to pop radio then. 2003 was the year I discovered Ampcast.com and got into some really random techno/indie stuff. But 1999 was interesting.

( y yes, I did like that. )
Some productivity has I!
Nov. 6th, 2008 03:42 pmSO TODAY IS GOOD DESPITE RAIN.
- For my Structures class, I spent this morning operating a band saw, using a disk sander and then getting out a metal file. YES FOR HANDS ON PROJECTS! Our display will look SHARP once we get it done. We've split the group in half to make things keep happening and keep schedules good. I'm with the nice kids, I think. I get to spend some time this weekend filing some more (because after you cut through a piece like we did, you need to make sure you don't INJURE anyone with the sharpness). It's all very zen.
- I thought I chipped a tooth yesterday, because I inherited my dad's bad enamel, but no. False alarm. Yay! Truth is I need a cleaning. >.>
- Decided to do the motion of a rocket skateboard instead of a hoverboard (not enough info). But it'll lead to the same basic thing, theoretically. It's surprisingly SIMPLY mathematically, I am all a-twitter, really. God, I am SUCH A NERD.
( and now for some audience participation! )
( epic poem updates! )
