I rather liked it! Somewhat spoilery details under the cut. I ramble because it basically took all summer to beat this game.
LONG game. This is good and bad. Lots of content to chew on, plenty of chances for me to go all pokemon and collect personae. But also times where it felt a little grindy. Yes, I'm an RPG fan that hates grinding. I know this makes no sense.
The story is pretty typical Japanese SAVE THE WORLD, but with more fatalism than usual for a videogame (but not unusual for film or books, which is why it didn't throw me as much as it should have) which made it less than typical. Which was nice. The POWER OF FRIENDSHIP moments were in fact quite touching and more organic than others and I appreciated that. Plus, they actually went into the fact that hey, YOU ARE ACTUALLY IN HIGH SCHOOL. And have to do your homework. At least until you max your Academics (HA HA DID THAT).
I mostly slogged through this game for the characters and my desire to have ALL THE MONSTERS. While the girls all resembled typical dating sim tropes at first, they thankfully all grew personalities of their own. The guys also had enough quirks to pull them out of their prospective stereotypes (except maybe Ken and Shinjiro out of the mains).
I can't pick a favorite out of the girls because there was something I liked about all of them. EVEN CRAZY STALKER CHIHIRO. I wanted Fuuka to be my nerdy BFF, in particular, and Aigis can be my protector forever. ;_; OH AIGIS ILU. Also Yukari isMitsuru's girlfriend a badass.
I didn't think I'd like Akihiko, because those I AM FOCUSED types tend to actually lack a personality outside of their angst. But Akihiko failing to be the pimp that people assume he is iswonderfully homosexual endearing. And I got choked up when his boyfriend got killed, and his whole resolution thing after that.
Junpei was my bro. I liked all aspects of his character development, and with all that doom and gloom around, it's nice to have a dude like that around. Him and Yukari's banter kind of made my life some days. XD Like siblings. <3 I wanted to give him a hug at the end.
So, in conclusion, good game, worth the 70+ hours to play because there are some funny, touching, and badass character moments, as well as some fun battle mechanics, and well, grown-up pokemon named after mythological characters. Something for everyone!
