The hard drives on the current gen consoles have spoiled me so, so much. Screwing around with memory cards was probably my least favorite thing about the 32/64 bit era. I remember what a pain in the ass it was to find them at PS1 launch, and I also remember when FF7 came out, having to leave the game on pause in Kalm for three days because I still didn't have one (this was before Gamestop became ubiquitous also, so if I couldn't find it at Electronics Boutique/Funcoland/Software Etc. at the mall, that meant a trip to Manhattan).
Playing PS1+2 games on the PS3 is awesome, I love that I can create an entire partition for each game, if I felt like it. The only thing that sucks about it is the lack of portability, and Sony's frequent derpyness about unlocking saves for copying to portable media (the gist: some games you can, some you can't. Sony and the publishers always point fingers at each other). :\
Re: FF4DS, yeah, those things are murder in this version. I'm 99% sure they used hardtype for the basis of the port, which would explain why the Subterrane was so brutal this time around. I remember having to do more level grinding near the final save point than I used to (it's the one in a long row of caves). Though tbh once I get to a decent enough level, I tend to just start running from fights down there until I get to Zemus. I'm pretty damned sure those fights are really designed to just drain the shit out of your resources so you're screwed by the time you get to the last battle. Especially the fights on the last level, with the crystal floor. I still have nightmares about the giant severed zombie Jesus heads (no really, that's what they look like) that reflect themselves and cast Holy on you. I found those a bit easier this time around, but I also figured out the new skill system pretty early on so my party was min-maxed to death by the time I got there and was pretty OP. When Rosa can buff the whole party in one turn, it's not so bad. :)
