Quick Weekend Highlights:
- Saw NASA people on Friday who were boring, but I got a free pin out of it!
- The Propulsions Professor bought us beer at Aero Social Night. So I had free food AND beer.
- Since Aero Social Night isn't late, I wingmanned for Justin and we hit up the place that makes Perfect Bloody Marys.
- Then I saw Max Payne. I thought it was nifty, good for when I didn't feel like thinking and just wanted to watch cool. Though... I don't get why it had to be Mark Wahlberg. Not that he was bad, he just didn't seem badass enough for me, even if they did a good job making him badass. If that makes sense?
- Marathoned Arrested Development, which is AN AWESOME SHOW. Oh, way to hit my thing about family dynamics, continuing story threads, AND awesome dialog.
- OH and the second part of my poem is up.
Make up a meme for yourself to do (a list of your favorite and least favorite things, guess the quote, whatever you want). Then make an easy one up for whoever comments, and they must post it in their journal as well as make one up for themselves. The cycle shall continue, and everyone will have lots of memes to do! I hope you're all bored at work...
Meme, from
safety_caesars, "List five underappreciated movies that everyone should see and why!"
1. Brick
Hardboiled slang. High School. Murder. Film Noir tropes. Atmospheric and haunting as hell soundtrack. Came across this while researching Film Noir, and my god, I just loved it to pieces. There's just something about combining my sort of I-need-to-watch-something-not-serious love of high school movies and my love of gritty detective stuff into one film and making it BEAUTIFUL in a blue-toned way that really just makes my heart sing.
2. Charade
When people think Audrey Hepburn, they tend to think Breakfast At Tiffany's, Roman Holiday, or maybe even Sabrina. But Charade is my favorite. Carey Grant! Mystery! Multiple aliases! Not to mention the wonderful jokes about how Audrey is too young for him. They remade this movie, but it lacked... well, it lacked the charm of the original. Plus, CHEESY INTRO AND SILLY CLUB GAMES. This is caper comedy and it's silly and cute.
3. October Sky
In the category of Movies About Space History That Do Not Suck, I think this is my favorite. While Apollo 13 was all inspiring and stuff, this one was very... it puts me back in the state I was when I was like, ten. It has a very "follow your dreams, but it's hard" message to it, and it really gives a good viewpoint for how roughneck a lot of our Smart People started out. Maybe it's because I don't necessarily dislike all my hicks, I dunno, it was very inspiring and good and if you see one space movie, see this one. Plus the science is good, and the trajectory problem he does on the board at one point is TOTALLY something I understand.
4. The Girl Next Door
Hear me out. I thought this movie would be AWFUL. Like another American Pie (hate hate hate). But it's like sticking Risky Business and Can't Hardly Wait (a favorite from my junior high years, shut up, that movie was hilarious) in a blender. Makes some interesting commentary on sexual expectations, too, and porn and things like that. It's a little raunchy at points, but it manages to do it in a way that's not completely explicit (no nudity). Plus, the main character kid's just adorable, and I liked how it ended. Soundtrack had some old favorites, too, with a little "new and hip" mixed in, but not to the point where it felt... forced.
5. Shipwrecked
I know, I rant about pirates a lot, but this movie isn't about pirates so much, even if they're the antagonists. It's about some cute little Norwegian kid that takes his dad's place on a ship because he injures his leg and they need the money. He's harassed at first, but eventually toughens up and get some respect. That's about when they get tossed in a storm and he gets stranded on an island by himself. It's a Disney movie that my mom taped eons ago and that I would watch on sick days. Good old adventure, and quite a fun story and cast of characters to boot. Kind of why I liked the first Pirates of the Caribbean but not the second so much (and why I just didn't bother to go see the third). Good family fun! And swords! I also liked the main girl a lot too, she had some guts.
And for myself... three songs I'm really into right now. Because I'm lazy.
1. Sneaker Pimps - The Fuel
2. Tori Amos - Big Wheel
3. Emilie Autumn - Dominant (it's an instrumental)
