Just some of the research for work. I made this FF-based because of the comms I run with. May or may not turn out to be useful, but it was a good way to fill a lull in my workload (aka, I had a half hour with nothing to do and engineers do not idle well)

Theres a LOT to be said for what sort system I like. LP system on 12 was really, REALLY good for special skills, but I honestly liked upgrading and mixing and matching my materia.

Adding effects to my weapons rules.

Let's see...

The only thing I don't like so much about the ADB system is the way one can just set the gambits, sit back, and let the characters do everything automatically while you just watch. If not for that, I'd've picked that one -- I love the whole never-leave-the-main-screen aspect -- but I like the way FFX allows a bit more on-the-spot planning in a battle. Though maybe I'm just biased towards these two because of the character-switching deal, which in my opinion was one of the best things to happen to the series as far as battle mechanics go. (That and FFXII's recharge-MP-as-you-walk feature.)

As far as systems go... I would've loved materia if it didn't take so damn long to level 'em up (though that little bit of pride and accomplishment when you finally master a materia was always nice). I loathe the Junction system (most especially the drawing of spells aspect) more than anything in any FF I've ever played, which is why I've gotten absolutely nowhere in FFVIII. The Sphere Grid in FFX was a step in the right direction, I think, but the locks make it a royal pain. Lv. 3 Key Spheres are hard to find, dammit, and I was often left with characters stuck at the ends of their paths just gathering AP until I could find a way to move 'em onward.

My favourite thing about the License Board is it took the Sphere Grid and improved on it, keeping the "everybody can learn everything" deal (and oh do I love me a party wherein everyone knows the Cure spells) but making the abilities more accessible than the Sphere Grid and its whole moving-down-paths schtick. Plus, it's better than materia in that everyone can access whatever spell you buy, as long as they've bought the license for it. (Not too keen on the having to buy licenses for Remedies to cure a wider selection of statuses, though.)

However, I hate the equipment part of the License Board; I gotta admit I'm a sucker for more of the older FFs as far as equipment systems go, with everyone (or at least some party members) having items specific to them and a few/several that multiple characters can access. I'm much in favour of relics/accessories, too -- the lack of them in FFX sucked, if only because the Ribbon armour ability was only available in FFX International and not the US release.

...dear gods, I ramble.

It was an interesting ramble, nonetheless?

I'm a slow plodding powergamer. XD But this license board thingy sounds interesting. Too bad I'll likely never get around to playing XII between working and everything.

Well, the first 10 are all people from my f-list, and FF7 is my primary fandom. But it is vaguely creepy.
