I really liked your points about critics because it's something that I've thought a fair amount about. It's a bit difficult to go through 4 years of lit class and not question the very act of criticing something. I agree with your point about biases. Even though it's only fanfiction, when I'm reviewing I try to take things seriously and be honest about a bias of mine when somebody brushes up against it. I do think that it's important to give feedback to people though because it's one of the best ways we have to grow and develop as writers. As a profession, however... well, it's always seemed like a bit of money-grubbing to me.
And I enjoyed the new Narnia movie too... though, C.S. Lewis and I will never be great friends because of what happens to Susan in The Last Battle. (Neil Gaiman wrote a short story called 'The problem of susan' and it still gives me chills.) When Aslan showed up I thought of you SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE it was a deus ex machina. And I chuckled quietly to myself about how one should never piss off plant life. They always win. ;)
