MRS. G BRINGS THE AWESOME!

GUESS WHO I SAW TODAY?
My seventh grade science teacher, the quirky woman who I aspire to be like when I grow up! She's fabulous and does some charity work with one of my bosses and was just coming by to leave some fliers for her. We chatted for a bit and she fussed over my hair and it was nice. Is it sad that I like seeing old teachers more than relatives? I mean, seriously that just made my day. I would not still be into science if not for this woman and her nontraditional teaching style (we used to make huge representations of biomes and the like in the back of the class... she also really got the integrated subject matter teaching started).
She's "retired" but I seriously doubt she'll ever do so fully. Besides, her husband is a pilot, it's not like she can't travel anywhere at the drop of a hat if she wants to (seriously, that's why it's so great to see her, she's always on the move). Mrs. G, STAY COOL. AND THANKS AGAIN FOR GETTING ME INVOLVED IN THE WETLANDS PROJECT THAT EVENTUALLY LED TO ME GETTING THIS JOB BECAUSE I LOVE IT. And I let her know to call my mom, because my mom likes phone calls. Apparently she and my mom went out to one of this state's Artist Colonies and went bebopping around sometime earlier this season. This is good, my mom needs to get out more.
I now really want to go check up on a few more of my old teachers. Especially Ms. W, god, I hope she's doing ok. Last I saw her was at her mom's funeral (now do you see why I am so into education? my teachers are like family). And Mr. B and DeMo... I saw Mr. B at the library back when I had purple hair, which was a while ago now. Haven't seen DeMo since my sister's HS graduation. Funny how all my teachers say I look different that I'm still easy to spot. Then again... I guess around my old school that doesn't take much. I clearly need to travel more and visit places like Austin and the like.
This is good. Next week is going to be insane since we've got a grant coming up and I'm getting stuck in charge of the edu-babble. Considering I've been lounging and doing some research and housekeeping stuff this week, I had better gear up. XD
Edit: NEVERMIND IT'S A COOL INSANE.
Alright, the main thing my company does is what is referred to as augmented reality. It was some gov't contracts that really helped keep this company float and not die out and basically be able to hire all the people we have hanging out here now.
Well, we're putting in a proposal to do some AR work with my game. As in holographic Mars base stuff. As in really fucking cool shit. It's just the planning and begging for funding stage, but god did I have fun in the meeting throwing around educationally viable options (one of which involved plant genetics...). And drawing pictures.
So, um. Today was like the Best Day Of The Week.

P.S. Why you might be a cat person is also eating your brain. God, this makes me want to ask someone to write me something about JENOVA and cats now. Seriously.
P.P.S. OMG this makes me want to pull out my old trainset stuff BADLY. My sister and I used to make Lego villages around the train, which inevitably had space ships (and a space shuttle, once I got that set... omg that was a GREAT Christmas the year I got that...)

Yay, science.
Date: 2008-06-06 06:40 pm (UTC)For example: one of my favourite correlations was a nineteen-nineties study that showed a correlation between ice cream sales and violent crime in the US. As ice cream sales increased, violent crime increased. Of course, the authors concluded that ice cream was in no way causal - people didn't go out and rob/rape/murder more people because of ice cream! The ice cream trend was masking the fact that violent crime tends to increase with mean outdoor temperature. It's been argued that a small part of the reason why Canada has a lower violent crime rate than the US is that for 4-6 months of the year here it's bloody cold! Nobody goes out and about when it's 40 below, thieves and thugs included. When you look at mean crime rates between the months, the summer is always the 'hot bed' for crime. Of course, that's not just true in Canada but any part of the world with a really strong difference in temperature between the seasons.
Statistics are fun. ^^

Date: 2008-06-06 09:56 pm (UTC)Don't have much time to read but THAT SOUNDS AWESOME.
Did you say Jenova Cats?
Date: 2008-06-06 09:51 pm (UTC)The person standing below, amidst books, a broken vase and four or five potted plants made a similar sound deep in his thin chest. "Goddamnit, you fucking... mutant cat, get down here."
The response was flattened ears and a snakelike hiss.
"Vincent, I swear to all that is holy, you are GOING to the vet." Vincent was not talking to himself this time, no, apparently while he'd been gone Veld had found another Jenovite to befriend. This Vincent was a malicious, evil, nasty, and altogether too intelligent for its own good cat.
"I'm not leaving, no matter how much you growl and hiss at me, if you try to maul my arm again I swear to Alexander I'm turning into Gigas."
"rrrr."
"I'm going to start counting."
"rrrr."
"One."
Silence
"Two." Vincent pulled the gun from the closet.
The cat then leaped from the bookcase and made its way to the kitty carrier.
Vincent slammed the door with some finality. "Last time I respond to big eyes and a 'please do me a quick favor'." Vincent lifted the carrier and put the gun into the back of his pants, just in case.
;) And now I've just geeked up your comments.
