Today was a really good day. Yesterday for some reason I just wasn't feeling doing ANYTHING, so I sat in my chair and watched Xena and played LEGO Batman on my DS, because I just wasn't feeling any PS2 games, and it's easier to DS and watch shows.

But today was sunny, cool, and a good day to go out to the antique places in the area. I really was just looking for some salt and pepper shakers. But I ended up with a pair of rollerskates (proper leather roller derby regulation ones that are negligibly large and were far too cheap for me to pass up).

And another sewing machine.

Now, if you follow me on twitter, you saw some of my deliberation process. Because I have a good sewing machine that does a lot of different stitches. And I have an old straight stitch that works pretty well (she's got some quirks), which I haven't actually moved out of my parents' basement yet. But the more sewing I do, the more I realize that hey, it's good to have at least two machines around.

And well, this was a Singer 15-91, presumably from the 40s (the seller marked it as that, but they clearly didn't even know the proper model and 15-91s could be anywhere from the 30s to the 50s), with a completely intact electrical cord, no catching when I spun the wheel, kept very clean, in a well kept cabinet. For $50. I think they priced it that way because the manual they had for it was a Singer 127 manual; but after some careful googling on my phone, I realized that it was in fact a 15-91. And WAY underpriced for the condition its in (just go ahead and look on eBay... most bids START at $50 but quickly escalate).

After reading a few reviews, and checking one of my favorite sites about vintage Singer machines... I bought it. Have to come back tomorrow to pick it up, cause I don't own a car and though this place is walking distance away, carrying a cast iron sewing machine in a cabinet is not gonna happen.

I'm really excited about this. And a little nervous. I think my inspection was thorough, but you never know until you try to sew with it. But even if I need to do a little work on it, I think it'll be worth it, because this is the kind of machine that can chew through leather and canvas like NOTHING.

Anyway, here's a crappy picture I took of her: here.. And a picture of one of her kind: here.

I also went and rollerskated on the walk/bike trail that runs through town once I came off my Best Purchase high. Next time I do that I'm going to just walk the two blocks it takes to get there and put my skates on when I get to the trail... sidewalks are somewhat perilous to rollerskate on.

And yes, I did find salt and pepper shakers. Now I am not allowed to go shopping for non-essentials for the rest of the month.

Have you considered obtaining a serger?

You can get my mom's old model (which dates from the late 90s/early 2000s) for around $150 (she paid almost $500). SO. WORTH. THE MONEY.

Srsly. If you ever plan on sewing with finicky fabric, a serger is a must-have. I plan to get one myself right after I obtain ACTUAL employment but until then I've been liberally borrowing mom's. ^^;
