I'm waiting until the vest for stealth!Hojo is done before showing that. And the femme!Auron stuff I'm waiting until I do a little more finishing work. Plus I was too lazy to put the kimono on to take a picture, as it doesn't look like much of anything if it's not on.

So here's two of the costumes I'm working on.

Daryl and Paine )
crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (matrix)
After a somewhat frustrating day at work on Friday, I'm glad it's the weekend. Suffice to say, I am really really looking forward to turning at least 30, maybe then I won't keep having to do a song and dance to prove to interns that yes, I do know more than them, and yes, I am qualified to give them tasks and quit going to the nearest male instead.

Sometimes I really just want to shake teenaged boys. Enough of that.

To make myself feel better and to use up my state tax return that came in the mail, I went to the Gamestop, and picked up several PS2 games because they are cheap, along with FFIV DS. It is not only fun, but economical to be behind on consoles sometimes. Starting FFIV DS alone made my day better, as I could probably go on for days about how much I adore Cecil Harvey, and I am kind of all sort of hearts over his little chibi dark knight form.

Seriously how fucking cute is everyone in chibi form? Also Kain? Your voice cracks me up. SO FUCKING SERIOUS.

I also spent some time with [personal profile] whitemage sewing, as she was using Effy while I was using Sandy. I have the lining attached to the front panels of my vest for the stealth Hojo cosplay for Failboat Wedding. Her Lu dress is very very sparkly. Sure, I am going to the special hell for showing up to someone's wedding in subtle cosplay/drag, but in this case it's worth it.

Tomorrow: finish that vest (I GET DISTRACTED OK), cut out pieces for Daryl coat, attach both pieces of Paine shawl thing together, take pictures.

So I managed to get a camera and hastily took some photos! I have this camera for the next three days so I may take pictures of other things too! LIKE MY REDONE EDEA HAT. It's too bad I took most of my costuming stuff home. :<

And yes, I was totally wearing that outfit today.

SO PICTURES YES? )

Which begs the question: do I wear this to class tomorrow?
crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (terra.solemnhour)
It's surprisingly SOFT and actually lighter than in the picture; WHICH IS GOOD. I need to get the curls worked out; they got a little mushed in the shipping. But I have my wig! Yay! First eBay purchase = SUCCESS.

I think I may be able to get it in a ponytail too!
crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (tifa.horizon)
Obviously, I'm thinking about cosplay today!

My dilemma is I have too many do-able, done, or mostly done costumes. So I figured I'd leave it to the masses again, cause you helped me sort my wig crisis~! And Otakon is only three days. And we're not really going to be there for much of Friday, I think.

So!

[Poll #1371361]

Keep in mind the Auron coat is getting actually MADE BY ME (I found a pattern, I just don't want to have a WOOL COAT in a costume). I have to wear Terra cause I'm in a group for that, but it'll be awesome. So top three are probably going. Unless I get lazy with sewing and then the simple ones are going. I'd just like an idea what would be cool so I can bust my ass or not. XD
crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (terra.solemnhour)
I bought wig #2

The auction time came up and there were no bids and the person selling it has a ton of great feedback, so I was like, what the hell. THIS IS MY FIRST eBay PURCHASE EVAR. THANKS FOR HELPING.
[Poll #1371257]

WIGS:

1. Green long and straight
2. Green, long and curly
3. Green and blonde mix, straight
4. Lime green and wavy
5. Golden blonde and wavy

I have my greyhound tickets, my registration, and I'm almost there on costumes! And today I had no class and am doing fine enough on homework and yeah.

In the process of doing my monthly fic backup to my wordpress, and the [community profile] yuletide reveal is up (and I still have no idea if my recipient read theirs...). So I might as well get out what I've been writing lately, so that I can clear my head for writing this month. Especially considering that [personal profile] imaginarybeasts is due the 10th and I've switched ideas AGAIN for it.

So I wrote/finished this in the last bit of December:

- Part 3 of my trippy They Were Four FF8 story. Only one left to write!

- Skips a Generation for my grandpa. I started this last Christmas vacation, figured I should finish it.

- Vertigen, next in the Liquid series for [profile] spoony_bards. I think I may actually finish this challenge! Eventually. I suck at theme challenges. Figures, the weird depressing one is the one I can finish. XD

- Jack of Clubs (The Breakfast Club) Ah, yeah. What I wrote for Yuletide. Wrote in this fandom last year, going to hopefully do something new next year, since I'm not offering it again. XD I need change, and I don't think I could think of anything else I'd want to write, since I got to write for my two favorite characters in it already.

And is it just me, or was the traditional fairy tales section of Yuletide REALLY good this year? I may volunteer for it next year, sounds fun, and I've been wanting to tackle some old tales for a while. XD

Working on "The Great War". I adore Rooks. They're so underrated. Also changed my layout (prolly will add a header at some point, for now I don't care) and switched up a lot of icons. I'm very into the switchover thing. I even went to a new Tiny Useful Notebook. I'm hardkore like that.

Cosplay stuff:

- Found a nice pink fancy fabric remnant to go with my continually evolving Terra costume. Should I bring that costume along, even if the wig sucks?

- Need to cut out those damn buttonholes on my steampunk!Auron coat already.

- Have the fabric for my white mage cape, which might become part of some mage!Cecil costume. At the very least, it'll be badass, since I'm using SHINY white fabric, and sparkley red for the triangles. So iconic.

- Need to be on a lookout for a jacket for the gunner!Aeris getup. Have the skirt, the shirt. Oh and I need a wig, or else I'm using a cheap one I already have. XD

I'll be bringing some random props and accessories, since I'm a magpie like that and have tons of that. Will be sure to dig them out of my bins before I head back to school.

~Cendri

P.S. Oh, and I've decided to use my tumblr to help with my "see something beautiful" everyday resolution. So yeah.
crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (tim gunn catchphrase)
Talked again with this floor's gamer girl, found out she's also a 4-H kid. Which is comforting to me, actually. Reminds me of some of the weirdos I hung out with in high school. Have offered her use of my Halloween Costume Bins for her costuming needs. May have actually gotten talked into DDR club on the basis it's really "rhythm and music games club" and the likelihood that the ones that annoyed me back in freshman year have probably graduated. I just know better than to discuss certain things with fanboys now. XD

It's always the fanboys I seem to get into arguments with. I wonder why that is. It's like my anime test ("Do you like Evagenlion?" if you answer 'no' we're very likely to be anime compatible. Sometimes this is wrong, but it is a good filter for me. XD). It just puzzles me, because on average I get along with more boys than girls; unless they're fans.

Good news! I FOUND MY STEAMPUNK!AURON COAT.

I dodged into the local used clothing/skater/hippie store and it was just hanging there, telling me to buy it. Was $10, long, but not TOO long (I want to be able to show off my boots a little and really, most old military coats are mid-calf), bright red, and the sleeves are not full length (FOR THE BELTED GLOVES. IT'LL BE PERFECT). I will need to use a little grey dye to give it a less SHINY RED look and more of a slightly dirty look, and I really need to clean the incense smell out of it, but that's just a couple cosmetics. The biggest thing will be moving the buttons so it'll have a sort of side opening--which I can totally do. Going to use the old buttonholes to help attach it on the inside. I had just intended on dodging in real quick, too. I'll also have to extend the collar, but I'm thinking that'll be a separate piece, so. It's a little thin for a winter coat, so hopefully I won't die. XD

I clearly have mad skills with recovering stuff.

~Cendri

P.S. [personal profile] darcenciel, I totally found pictures of my old Cid Highwind Cosplay. I know, it's ghetto. I was totally wearing my chem goggles.
crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (molly oh ones)
I was a bad student today and got distracted by all the things I've been ignoring for favor of school. Which isn't good, since I have THREE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS DUE TOMORROW. TWO OF WHICH ARE DUE IN THE MORNING.

It's ok, the day is not over yet and I do work better under a little pressure.

I caught up on some fanfic reading I've been meaning to do (comments will follow, folks!), but mostly I started a cosplay.com account. Which surprisingly is time consuming as all get out. But since I have two pretty decent cosplays under my belt, I figured, what the hell. it's here.

This is mostly because our photoshoot pictures are finally up! And in celebration and not wanting to be in school, I posted at [profile] ffcosplay and generally have been an internet loser. I LOVE HAVING FRIENDS THAT WILL WEAR COSTUMES WITH ME! No, really, other than my sister, I've never had anyone to dress up with. I did talk my friend Matt into dressing up at Neo once, since I had a Trinity costume (my mom is wonderful and she picks up bargain costumes for me all the time, since she knows I do Halloween for a week... this is how I have two huge bins of just MY costuming stuff. Really.) and that was fun. But a whole group? I wish I could do that everyday.

[profile] qudaitsewukong did make a point about doing "Professional Cosplay Wednesdays" because of my one asshole professor. This is a very tempting idea, which I may do some of. XD

Um, I finally got the GOOD MISO RAMEN I've been craving, since I hopped over to the food mart around here. And I had a Red Bull. Which probably wasn't the best idea. OH WELL.

Hrm, what other things can I distract myself with... KIDDING. I may need to just leave this room. GOD I love not having class on Thursdays. BACK TO BEING WORKING AND STUFF.

So I was at work for an hour before I decided to come home and work. Because I'm not playing the schedule game and because I'm still hacking up a lung. But thankfully this staying out of a cold office and sitting at a desk that has two monitors did help me feel better and get stuff done. Wahoo.

I have an excuse to make my Terra costume more detailed (and get a green wig, ha) since [personal profile] darcenciel wants to be Shadow and start up an FFVI group. I'm down with that. I may even get a prop sword out of the deal!

And awesomeness! They went with one of my themes suggested for [community profile] fst! I suggested mentor characters, cause, yeah. This is me we're talking about. I have far too many mentor characters I adore, I may need some help picking when that comes around. XD This is basically silly, but at least that comm is picking up a little again and is full of less fail. I can't help it, I like music, and I like mixtapes. So.

I finished Beauty today as well, mainly because it's due back at the library soon, so I spend a little longer doing lunch break. It reminded me why my favorite moral was always "appearances can be deceiving" because yeah. If there was ever a childhood moral I clung to, it was that one. I guess that's why I'm so utterly and completely turned off when people redeem prettyboy villains--it just doesn't jive with that principle. And I'm nothing if not stubbornly principled. I guess this carries on with my trend of liking facially-scarred regretful types (and I mean UGLY scars) as they exist in a grey area between. It's food for thought at least. Not that heroes can't be pretty, I mean, I like Cecil (he's my favorite because he's flawed probably more than anyone would like to admit). But I have to wonder if less villains would get redeemed if less of them were pretty.

Maybe it's indicative of my own journey of principles. I'm all about balance now. I guess that means for me acknowledging that certain things exist side by side or something existential like that.

Book review to follow.

Ha, I almost forgot to update! Today was insane, basically. Things like to overlap on Mondays. But I came home, had a beer, watched my mom play Lego Indiana Jones (OMG IT IS SO CUTE) and let the workday melt away. That and sci-fi had some Star Trek: TNG episodes (Picard and the metamorph hottie episode and a Luxanna Troi marriage scheme... oh I love you Trek. For your silliness.)

But I have exciting pictures! I WORKED ON MY HAT TODAY.

+ Peacock feathers!
+ Crow feathers!
+ Action shot!

Yeah, that's about it.

So I looked at my cosplay list for Otakon. And ha, it's going to be awesome. I <3 putting FF things in strange eras. Behold.

- Steampunk!Edea (late 1800s dress, with various mechanically-inspired additions)
- Gangster!Veld (well, a Turk, but if I'm going Turk, I might as well put a scar on my cheek and wear something 20s/30s like this and scowl)
- Hip-Hop!Tellah (SAGEMASTER TELLAH IN DA HOUSE... Santa beard + huge loud clothes + grandma's bling? = awesome. Think 90s.)
- and Amano!Terra (which isn't actually a reinvention, but it's a pretty costume and I worked hard on the props, though I am half tempted to do an 80s rendition of it sometime, cause it wouldn't be a stretch. Side ponytail anyone?)

3/4 costumes are either throwing things together or already made (though I still should fix a couple things on my Terra costume). And the Edea one has most of the tedious work done (seriously, the amount of patching I had to do would drive a normal person insane... I found it soothing). Wings may not get made, depends on whether or not my mom is busy (because she wants to make them, it's her contribution). Since my mom LOVES her Wii, the chances are less. But I still have an AWESOME HAT and some other accessories to work on.

So, here's my To Do, which I SHOULD START WORKING ON TONIGHT and will probably go on up until August. AUGUST IS APPROACHING FAST OMG I AM EXCITED. it looks worse than it is )

It only LOOKS long.

And my mom is playing Wii as I type this. She turned it on this morning after taking care of some chore stuff--I may have to borrow some games from work, because she's quickly gaining skillz. I will have to ask for suggestions from work peoples on adventurish games. Am getting her a dance game for Christmas, and talking Dad into a WiiFit from him. Considering my mom has been talking about doing more stuff.

~Cendri

P.S. Didn't get to see all of Project Runway because of mom's birthday. Will find rerun. Am excited to see the results, because they brought back MY FAVORITE challenge and MY FAVORITE designer (Austin. I'm a huge Austin fan, he's such an ADORABLE little queen).

P.P.S. Dr. Horrible part II is up. <3!

P.P.P.S. SEV: THUG 4 LYFE.

Much as I love work, I am anxious to get home and work on my costume. XD During the school year I really missed being able to fiddle with things, and now that I'm working and all that, I have more and yet less time. And look I have feather trim! I am going to work on a waist cincher, made from the bodice piece of this hideous shirt I got from a friend of my sister's. The pinstripe part is pretty damn cool, so I'll see how it looks and what more I have to trim off (I already detached the boob sag portion).

And I'm sure it'll show up on [community profile] ff_press, but [profile] phoenixmonthly is open for submissions/questions/whatever (we have a majority on that, right guys?). We're sort of playing this by ear, so if you want to submit something, please read the rules and not be a jerk. ^^ I also spent some time making the userinfo pretteh, so go look at that. XD

Not much else today, it's kind of been a dull day. Tedious grant and standards stuff. Going to hopefully get to do the fun parts of this Augmented Reality thing tomorrow.

For some reason I really want to make icons. Maybe if it's slow tomorrow. I try to use my time at home for noncomputer pursuits. XD

crankyoldman: "Hermann, you don't have to salute, man." [Pacific Rim] (marla)
I was out until about 3 am last night, which was fun but it makes today kind of... difficult. Pair that with the fact the internet here keeps dipping out (likely power fluctuations from the storms yesterday) and I've been pretty slow. I don't really have much to report about last night other than it was fun seeing people, much talk was had and I am apparently "less spazzy". XD Well, I could see that, as some of these people I haven't seen since before the divorce, so that probably factors in a little. I have gotten a lot less goofy. Part of me wishes I could be more of a clown like I used to be. One step at a time I guess.

I left work early due to crazy weather. And also being tired. XD

Some links!

+ This is an interesting clump of articles. Makes me think of how people post pictures of "awful cosplays" and proceed to skewer them. I can see making criticisms of poor quality of costumes, but often it's about the appearance of the person as a whole, and I often find that kind of snark to be in poor taste. In fact, some of my favorite cosplays are less how the person themselves looks in the costume and more the craftsmanship. Especially considering how in the video game/anime fandoms most of the characters are all this sort of weird Caucasian/Japanese mix that's unattainable for most of the population.

+ Well if this isn't the most interesting political article I've read in a while. I'm going to leave this without comment so ya'll can soak it in.

All the driving seems to have made me unable to sleep at night and really wiped out. So I played hookey to reset myself. Means I slept nearly all day and got some sewing done, (WHICH IS SUPER EXCITING). I should take pictures, I am so proud of getting a lot of work done on the Main Problem, which was the tear in the bodice. Not finished, but more than started. Once I have that sewed up it's just looking for little places to mend, and starting to attach the feathers (sorceress needs feathers, or else I'm just walking around in a Victorian mourning dress XD).

And my WIP list has changed up a bit.
